The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to remove caste-based tags from the names of schools and colleges within four weeks, invoking Article 226 of the Constitution and public policy principles.
The Court held that caste names contradict the constitutional values of fraternity and equality, especially in education. Non-compliance may lead to de-recognition of institutions.
The Court also urged the implementation of Justice K Chandru Committee recommendations, which called for the removal of terms like ‘Kallar Reclamation’ and ‘Adi Dravidar Welfare’ from the names of government schools.
The judgment aims to dismantle systemic caste divisions perpetuated through institutional and societal naming practices.
