The Supreme Court has issued notice to five comedians accused of making insensitive jokes targeting persons with disabilities. The Court directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to ensure their presence at the next hearing, warning of coercive action if they fail to appear.
The petition, filed by Cure SMA Foundation, argues that influential comedians must be held accountable for spreading harmful stereotypes under the guise of humor.
The Court emphasized the need to balance free speech with the right to dignity and hinted at framing guidelines to prevent such derogatory content. The case is scheduled for a hearing on July 8.
