The Supreme Court constituted a ten-member National Task Force to address student suicides in higher educational institutions.
The Supreme Court highlighted that student suicides have surpassed farmer suicides, with over 13,000 cases in 2021 and a 4% rise in 2024.
Following allegations of caste discrimination in two IIT Delhi student deaths, the Court formed a task force, led by Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, to investigate causes and suggest legal reforms for prevention and accountability.
The task force has been given four months to submit a preliminary report and eight months to provide a final report with its findings and recommendations.
