Supreme Court to Hear Final Appeals from Gujarat Govt and Convicts in Godhra Train Burning Case on May 6–7

The Supreme Court will hold final hearings on May 6 and 7, 2025, for appeals related to the 2002 Godhra train burning case.

The Gujarat government seeks to reinstate the death penalty for 11 convicts whose sentences were commuted to life imprisonment by the Gujarat High Court in 2017. Meanwhile, the convicts are appealing their convictions and life sentences.

The incident, where 59 people died in the burning of the Sabarmati Express's S-6 coach, led to widespread riots in Gujarat.

The Supreme Court will now consider appeals challenging these convictions and sentences.
