34 Lakh Appeals Pending; Supreme Court Says They Cannot Vote in Upcoming Bengal Elections

The Supreme Court held that people whose appeals against exclusion from the voter list are still pending cannot be allowed to vote in the 2026 West Bengal elections.

The Court noted that over 34 lakh appeals are currently pending before appellate tribunals.

It reasoned that allowing such voters to participate would disrupt the process and overburden tribunals, especially with elections approaching.

The Court clarified that only those whose appeals are decided in their favour before the cut-off date will be included in the final electoral roll.
