The Maharashtra government has filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court’s acquittal of all twelve accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta mentioned the matter before CJI BR Gavai, seeking urgent listing. The CJI agreed to hear it on July 24.
The High Court had overturned the 2015 trial court verdict that sentenced five to death and seven to life, citing serious lapses in investigation and unreliable witness testimony. The blasts killed 187 people and injured over 800. Kamal Ansari, one of the accused, died in 2021.
