During hearings on petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls, the Election Commission (ECI) informed the Supreme Court that Aadhaar is not a valid proof of Indian citizenship, asserting that Aadhaar only confirms identity, not citizenship.
The Court responded that citizenship determinations fall under the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the ECI.
While the SIR will proceed, the Bench advised considering Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration cards as acceptable documents, and asked the ECI to explain any exclusions.
A detailed response is due by July 21, with the next hearing on July 28.
