Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal announced that the Advocates Act, 1961, will soon be amended to provide statutory recognition to General Counsels (GCs), akin to that of practising advocates under the 1961 law.
In an interactive session with GCs, the GCs pointed that the only weakness they had was the lack of statutory recognition and urged him to act on it.
Speaking at a General Counsels' Association India (GCAI) event, Meghwal and the judges acknowledged their key role in corporate legal affairs and contributions to corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
The amendment aims to enhance GCs’ professional standing, ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve.
The government will conduct consultations before finalizing the changes.
