“AI Can Draft Your Petition, But Can it Deliver Justice?”: Justice Sanjay Karol

Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Karol cautioned against excessive dependence on artificial intelligence in the legal system, stressing that while AI can assist in drafting petitions and legal research, it cannot replace the human conscience and reasoning essential to justice delivery.

Speaking at the Indian Law & AI Congress 2026, he highlighted concerns around AI-generated fake judgments, misinformation, and ethical risks in court proceedings.

Justice Karol observed that technology should remain a tool to support judges and lawyers, not substitute judicial discretion, empathy, and constitutional values that form the foundation of the justice system.
