Interfaith Couple Reunited, Police Action Ordered for Illegal Detention : Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court reunited an interfaith couple who were unlawfully detained with police assistance after leaving the court premises.

The Division Bench of Justices Salil Kumar Rai and Divesh Chandra Samant held that the woman, being a major, has the constitutional right to choose her partner and live with him.

The Court described the act of detention as a violation of fundamental rights and instructed the police to ensure the couple’s safe escort to a destination of their choice.

The Court directed that departmental action be initiated against the responsible officers and reiterated that personal liberty remains paramount, immune to familial or social pressures.
