Allahabad High Court to Examine Name Change Post-Sex Reassignment Surgery

The Allahabad High Court will examine whether an individual can legally change their name after undergoing sex reassignment surgery.

The case concerns Sharad Roshan Singh, formerly Sarita, an assistant teacher from Shahjahanpur who completed his gender transition in 2023. After obtaining a sex change certificate and identity card from the District Magistrate, he approached the Court seeking to update his name in official records.

The Court sought inputs from senior advocates and will examine Section 10 of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which mandates updating official records after gender recognition.

The matter is listed for hearing on October 30.
