The Allahabad High Court has upheld the Uttar Pradesh government's policy to merge primary and upper-primary schools with fewer than 50 students into nearby institutions.
Petitions were filed by guardians of 51 students from Sitapur, alleging the move violated Article 21A of the Constitution by increasing travel distance.
The Court dismissed the challenge, holding that the policy aligns with the Right to Education Act, its Rules, and the National Education Policy, 2020.
The Court observed that the mergers aim to enhance infrastructure, transport, and educational quality without infringing students’ fundamental rights.
