The Allahabad High Court imposed ₹15 lakh costs on a husband who sought maintenance from his wife while allegedly concealing his own income and filing false affidavits before the Court.
The Court found that the husband, a practising advocate, had portrayed himself as unemployed despite evidence showing otherwise.
It also noted that he had compelled his wife, a High Court employee, to take substantial loans from her salary account and transferred the money to himself.
Observing that marriage cannot be used as a means of economic exploitation, the Court dismissed his plea and held that litigants suppressing material facts are not entitled to equitable relief.
