The Assam government, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will use the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam), 1950 Act to deport illegal immigrants, which allows district officials to remove people staying illegally or posing a threat to public safety, without waiting for the Foreigners’ Tribunal decisions.
The move follows the Supreme Court’s approval, which stated the government can use this Order along with Section 6A of the Citizenship Act.
While existing tribunal cases continue, new cases will be handled directly by district officials. Some families have challenged this, claiming it as unfair and violative of human rights.
