Auroville Residents Cannot Demand Council Membership, Can Only Advise Governing Body: Supreme Court

  • Case Name: The Auroville Foundation vs. Natasha Storey
  • Judge(s): Justices Bela M Trivedi and Prasana B Varale

The Supreme Court ruled that the Residents' Assembly of Auroville Foundation has no legal right to be part of any committee or council formed by the Governing Board.

Under the Auroville Foundation Act, the Assembly can only advise and make recommendations but cannot demand membership.

A bench set aside the Madras High Court’s order quashing the Auroville Town Development Council (ATDC), stating that the Governing Board alone has the authority to constitute councils.

The Court also criticized repeated petitions obstructing development and imposed a ₹50,000 cost on Natasha Storey, directing her to deposit it with the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
