Australia Passes World-First Law Banning Under-16s from Social Media

Australia has banned children under 16 from creating social media accounts on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook, Reddit and Snapchat.

Companies will face fines of 50 million AUD (Rs 275 Crore) if they allow children under 16 to create accounts.

Platforms have one year to comply but cannot demand government-issued IDs or digital identification to protect privacy.

Unlike other nations like France and some US States, the ban is absolute and does not require parental consent.
