The Supreme Court has ruled that courts cannot grant bail, regular or anticipatory, just because an accused promises to deposit a certain sum of money.
Upholding the cancellation of bail for a man who failed to deposit ₹6 crore after making such a promise, the Court stressed that bail must be based strictly on the merits of the case.
It called monetary conditions “onerous” and said they dilute the dignity of the judicial process. High Courts and Trial Courts have been directed to stop this practice immediately.
