Banks to Block Payments for Real-Money Games Under Online Gaming Rules, 2026

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has notified the Online Gaming Rules, 2026, which mandate banks to suspend transactions for platforms classified as "real money games."

Effective May 1, 2026, the rules establish the Online Gaming Authority of India to regulate the sector. This Authority, headquartered in Delhi, will determine if a game involves deposits and wagering to qualify as a real-money game.

It holds the power to direct financial institutions to block payment flows to non-compliant platforms.

While the framework promotes e-sports and social gaming, it adopts a prohibitory stance toward real-money gaming, aligning with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025.
