The Allahabad High Court was informed that the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh has unanimously resolved to suspend the licences of advocates whose names figure as history-sheeters or gangsters in police records.
The disclosure was made during the hearing of a petition expressing concern over advocates facing serious criminal allegations. The Bar Council stated that it has taken suo motu action against 98 advocates, with disciplinary proceedings currently pending against 23 of them.
The Court observed that any punitive action must be based on accurate verification.
It directed the Bar Council to submit a pen drive containing details of advocates issued certificates of practice, to enable cross-checking with police records before further steps are taken.
