The Bar Council of India (BCI) clarified via an RTI response that its recent notice to IIT Kharagpur concerning unauthorised LL.M. degrees was actually a typographical error.
The intended recipient was IIT Indore, linked to its curriculum in Cybersecurity and Cyber Law. The BCI’s letter dated June 25, 2025, mistakenly replaced "IIT Indore" with "IIT Kharagpur" in paragraph 24, resulting in an erroneous show-cause notice.
The advisory has targeted several institutions, including NLIU Bhopal, O.P. Jindal Global University, and NLU Delhi, for offering LL.M. or similarly titled programmes in online or hybrid modes without prior BCI approval under the Legal Education Rules, 2008 and 2020.
