BCI Flags Dentons-Link Legal, CMS-IndusLaw Tie-Ups for Violating Foreign Lawyers Rules

The Bar Council of India has raised concerns over the Dentons-Link Legal and CMS-IndusLaw alliances, alleging violations of the Foreign Lawyers Rules, 2023 (amended in 2025).

In a press release, BCI warned that structures like Swiss Vereins, joint branding, or exclusive referral tie-ups require registration under the new framework. Notices are being issued seeking full disclosure of the alliances' structures.

Non-compliance may lead to action under the Advocates Act, including misconduct proceedings. Citing the AK Balaji judgment, BCI reiterated that indirect entry of foreign firms without registration remains impermissible.
