BCI Rules Prohibit Face Coverings for Women Lawyers in Court: J & K HC

Syed Ainain Qadri, claiming to be an advocate, appeared before the Jammu & Kashmir HC to represent petitioners with her face covered. She refused to remove the cover, asserting her right to do so.

The Court referred to Section 49(1) (gg) of the BCI Rules, which outlines the dress code for lady advocates, and noted that the rules do not permit women to appear with a face cover.

The petition filed by the Qadri was dismissed due to an alternative remedy, highlighting the need for verifiable professional identity of advocates, in line with Bar Council of India standards.
