BCI to Form High-Level Panel to Examine One-Year vs Two-Year LL.M Equivalency

The Bar Council of India (BCI) will constitute a high-level committee, headed by a former Chief Justice of India, to examine the equivalency of one-year and two-year LLM degrees.

The committee will comprise academicians from National Law Universities, central and state universities, and private law institutions.

This follows Supreme Court directions amid legal challenges to BCI’s 2020 rules that denied equivalency to one-year LLMs, particularly foreign degrees.

The committee will propose frameworks for academic parity, teacher training, and curriculum harmonization nationwide. The decision came after a four-hour stakeholder meeting held on April 22.
