The Bar Council of India has barred new law colleges and legal education centers for three years to curb the rise of substandard institutions and safeguard the integrity of legal education.
Existing colleges cannot add new courses or batches without BCI’s approval. The move targets indiscriminate state NOCs, poor inspections, commercialisation, and faculty shortages.
Violations could lead to withdrawal of recognition, invalidation of degrees, and ineligibility for enrolment under the Advocates Act.
Exemptions apply for institutions serving SC/ST/EWS groups, persons with disabilities, remote or tribal districts, and state or central universities established by statute, subject to strict compliance.
