BCI Moves Supreme Court on Women’s Quota in Bar Councils
The Bar Council of India (BCI) has approached the Supreme Court seeking approval for a formula to implement reservation for women in State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India.
The plea follows the enactment of provisions introducing women’s reservation in bar body elections. The BCI has proposed a rotational mechanism for identifying seats reserved for women across different states to ensure uniform implementation.
The matter assumes significance as several State Bar Councils are preparing for elections, and clarity from the Supreme Court is expected to guide the reservation process and electoral framework for legal bodies across the country.
