The Bar Council of India (BCI) has notified amended rules allowing foreign lawyers and law firms to practice foreign law in India on a reciprocity basis.
The foreign lawyers will be restricted to non-litigious matters, such as international arbitration and cross-border legal issues. The rules aim to safeguard Indian advocates' interests. Indian lawyers may now register for dual practice abroad without relinquishing domestic rights.
The concept of “Indian-Foreign Law Firms” allows Indian entities to practice both Indian and foreign law. Strict registration, documentation, and a 60-day cap on unregistered "fly-in, fly-out" engagements apply.
This framework ensures regulated legal collaboration without undermining India’s legal ecosystem.
