The Bar Council of India (BCI) has demanded urgent details from the West Bengal Bar Council regarding the legal enrolment of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The inquiry was triggered after Banerjee recently appeared before the Calcutta High Court wearing advocate robes.
The BCI is investigating whether she properly suspended her license during her fifteen-year political tenure and if she followed legal protocols for resuming practice after leaving office.
Highlighting that constitutional office-bearers must typically cease active practice, the BCI has ordered all original records to be preserved without any alterations, seeking a full factual report on her status by May 16.
