BCI Seeks Supreme Court Approval to Hike Enrollment Fees to ₹25,000

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking to increase the enrollment fee for new advocates from ₹750 to ₹25,000.

This request follows the SC's July 2024 judgment in Gaurav Kumar v. Union of India, which restricted Bar Councils from charging fees beyond those prescribed under Section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961.

The BCI argues that the current fee structure, unchanged for over three decades, is inadequate due to inflation and rising administrative costs.

The Supreme Court has sought the assistance of the Attorney General of India on this matter.
