Bengaluru Court Orders Husband to Pay Maintenance Despite Wife’s High Income

A Bengaluru court has directed a man to pay maintenance to his wife, who earns a six-figure salary.

The court held that maintenance is a legal duty, not charity, and marital responsibilities cannot be avoided merely because the wife is financially independent.

The couple got married in 2012 and has a son. In 2019, the wife sought divorce and maintenance under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, alleging neglect of their child’s education and frivolous appeals by the husband.

The husband argued that her high income made support unnecessary, but the court rejected this contention.
