Bombay High Court Quashes Cruelty Case Against Matchmaker for Concealing Groom’s Impotency

  • Case Name: Kalidas Sopanrao Landge and Ors v State of Maharashtra and Anr.

The Bombay High Court (Aurangabad Bench) set aside an FIR under Section 498A IPC against a matchmaker and several in‑laws accused of concealing the husband’s impotence before marriage.

The FIR accused them of concealing the husband’s impotency during marriage negotiations. However, the Court ruled the matchmaker is not a “relative” of the husband and thus outside the purview of Section 498A and cannot be prosecuted.

The court also cleared the woman’s mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and paternal aunt of similar charges, citing a lack of specific allegations and evidence.

Allegations against the father‑in‑law alone will proceed.
