Bombay High Court Questions Jain Community’s Right to Week-Long Slaughterhouse Ban During Paryushan

The Bombay High Court questioned whether the Jain community has any statutory right to demand a week-long closure of slaughterhouses during Paryushan Parva.

The plea challenged the BMC Commissioner’s order allowing closure only on August 24 and 27, despite the festival lasting from August 20 to 27.

Advocates Abhinav Chandrachud and Prasad Dhakephalkar argued that Jains form a significant population in Mumbai and cited Ahmedabad’s full-week ban.

The bench observed that no legal right mandates such closure, stressing the order must be within the law. The court issued notice to the State and BMC, adjourning the matter for two weeks.
