The Bombay High Court has issued notice to the Maharashtra government on a PIL seeking basic toilet facilities across Maharashtra highways. The bench stressed that basic sanitation facilities are part of the right to life under Article 21.
Advocate Ruju Thakker argued that despite a 2018 policy to build 400 toilets, the State failed to act, violating commuters' dignity, health, and environment. Lack of facilities like sanitary incinerators and nursing rooms was highlighted.
RTI replies revealed major gaps in hygiene infrastructure. The plea invoked Section 5 of the Maharashtra Highways Act and Article 48A to emphasize the State’s legal obligations.
The case will be heard next on June 13.
