PIL in Bombay High Court Alleges Prada Copied GI‑Tagged Kolhapuri Chappal Design in Milan Show

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Bombay High Court against Prada for allegedly copying the design of Maharashtra’s GI-tagged Kolhapuri Chappal in its Spring/Summer 2026 collection showcased in Milan.

The petitioners claim Prada’s ‘toe ring sandals’ amount to cultural misappropriation and unauthorised commercialisation, harming the artisan community’s rights and livelihoods.

The plea claims to restrain Prada from using the design, demands a public apology, and asks for compensation for artisans.

The petitioners also urged the government to strengthen protection for GI products and ensure recognition of traditional Indian craftsmanship in global markets.
