Bombay High Court Seeks State Reply on Mosques' Plea Against Loudspeaker Removal for Azaan

The Bombay High Court has issued notices to the Maharashtra government, Mumbai Police, and Pollution Control Board on a plea by five mosques challenging the removal of loudspeakers used for Azaan.

The petitioners allege arbitrary action, selective targeting of Muslim institutions, and violation of constitutional rights under Articles 14, 15, 21, 25, and 26. They argue that the enforcement lacked noise data and was politically motivated.

They also object to a circular requiring land-ownership proof for loudspeaker licenses.

The court has directed the authorities to submit detailed responses, including the record of speaker removals, by July 9, 2025.
