Bombay High Court Takes Cognizance of 'Copy-Paste' Witness Statements in Criminal Investigations

The Bombay High Court at Aurangabad took suo motu cognizance of police officers using 'copy-paste' witness statements during investigations, calling it a dangerous practice that could unfairly benefit the accused.

This was observed in a suicide abetment case, highlighting concerns over the authenticity of statements, especially in serious offenses like Section 306  and 498A of the IPC.

The Court appointed an Amicus Curiae to collect data and suggest measures to improve investigations. It directed the State to issue guidelines on properly recording witness statements.

The next hearing is scheduled for June 27, with suggestions due by June 20.
