The Bombay High Court heard a case filed in 1999 seeking regulation of private coaching centers in Maharashtra to curb malpractices.
The petitioner argued that these centres operated without oversight, lacked basic facilities, and that government teachers prioritized coaching classes over school duties.
In 2000, an ordinance was introduced but never became law. The State counsel informed the Court that a draft bill has been prepared and will be presented in the Monsoon Session.
The Court also noted the Centre’s guidelines issued on 16 January 2024, urging States to regulate coaching centers.
The next hearing is scheduled for 28 July.
