Calcutta High Court Criticizes State Over Lack of Funds for District Courts

The Calcutta High Court reprimanded the West Bengal government for not sanctioning funds essential for district courts' daily operations, such as purchasing paper and ink cartridges.

Highlighting a “very sorry state of affairs,” the Chief Justice revealed that advocates are personally supplying paper for court functions.

This issue arose during a hearing on tram restoration for the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the state allocated funds for trams but failed to address 40 pending High Court proposals.

The Chief Justice warned of judicial intervention if the situation persists.
