CCI Orders Probe into TASMAC Over Alleged Anti-Competitive Practices in Beer Sales

  • Case Name: Chakra R Prabhakaran vs. Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation into Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) over allegations of favoring select beer brands while limiting consumer choices.

The probe follows a complaint that TASMAC, which holds a liquor retail monopoly in Tamil Nadu, disproportionately stocks brands like SNJ 10000 and British Empire from SNJ Breweries and Kals Breweries.

CCI found that the share of these brands in TASMAC’s procurement significantly increased in recent years. The Director General has been directed to investigate procurement policies and sales data within 60 days.

TASMAC is also under Enforcement Directorate scrutiny for alleged financial irregularities exceeding ₹1,000 crore.
