Centre Amends IT Rules and Brings AI Content Under Regulatory Framework

The Union government has amended the Information Technology rules to regulate AI-generated content and sharply reduce the timeline for removal of flagged unlawful content.

The revised framework formally includes artificial intelligence content within the scope of the rules and prescribes new compliance obligations for users and technology intermediaries. Under the amendments, platforms must take down notified unlawful content within three hours, replacing the earlier 36-hour deadline.

Non-consensual intimate imagery must be removed within two hours, and user complaints must be addressed within seven days. Significant social media intermediaries are required to prominently label AI-generated images and audio and embed traceable metadata.

The changes, effective February 20, are aimed at tackling deepfakes, child sexual abuse material and other unlawful online content.
