Union government requests CJI to recommend a successor

The Union Government has initiated the process to appoint the next Chief Justice of India by seeking a formal recommendation from the incumbent Chief Justice B.R. Gavai.

As per the Memorandum of Procedure for the Appointment of the Chief Justice of India and Other Judges of the Supreme Court, the Law Ministry must obtain the outgoing CJI’s recommendation before the appointment. Justice Surya Kant is next in line to assume office based on seniority.

Chief Justice Gavai, who retires on November 24, is currently on a four-day official visit to Bhutan and is expected to forward his recommendation upon return.
