Centre Defends Onion Export Ban, Terms MEP Temporary to Curb Price Spike

The Centre defended its decision to ban onion exports and impose a Minimum Export Price (MEP), stating that both measures were temporary and necessary to shield consumers, particularly low-income households, from sharp retail price spikes.

It observed that adverse weather conditions and reduced market arrivals in certain years created volatility that required immediate intervention to maintain price stability.

On concerns over farmer remuneration, the Centre said it adopted a balanced approach to protect consumers while ensuring growers received fair returns.

It added that such trade restrictions are lifted once domestic supply improves and prices stabilise.
