The Union Government has extended Senior Advocate R. Venkataramani’s term as Attorney General of India by two years, effective 1 October 2025.
His initial three-year tenure, beginning October 2022, was scheduled to end on 30 September 2025, but the extension carries it through to 30 September 2027.
Born on 13 April 1950 in Pondicherry, Venkataramani enrolled as a lawyer in 1977 and was designated Senior Advocate in 1997. He has represented the Centre, states, universities and PSUs in key constitutional, statutory and regulatory cases.
Under Article 76(1) of the Constitution, the Attorney General is appointed by the President on the advice of the Central Government.
