The Central government stated before the Supreme Court that all mandatory procedural safeguards were complied with while passing the preventive detention order against climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act.
The case arose from a plea filed by Wangchuk’s wife questioning his detention following protests in Leh seeking statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The Court was apprised that the detention was ordered as Wangchuk was allegedly instigating people in a sensitive border area near Pakistan and China, and that his statements were viewed as posing a threat to public order and national security, thereby attracting the provisions of the NSA.
