The Centre has tabled three constitutional amendment bills in the Lok Sabha to remove the Prime Minister, Union ministers, Chief Ministers, and State/UT ministers if they are arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges carrying a minimum of five years’ imprisonment.
Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, covering Articles 75, 164, 239AA, and Section 54 of the J&K Reorganisation Act.
The President or Governor would declare the post vacant on the 31st day. While the government called it a step for accountability, the Opposition slammed the move as “unconstitutional,” warning it could be misused against political rivals.
