The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has proposed amendments to the IT Rules, making it mandatory to label AI-generated or “synthetically generated” content.
The draft changes aim to curb the spread of deepfakes and deceptive media by strengthening accountability requirements for intermediaries such as Facebook and YouTube.
MeitY said the move addresses growing concerns over AI-manipulated content that can harm reputations, influence elections, and enable financial fraud. The proposal also introduces due diligence obligations for platforms to identify and flag synthetic media that could mislead users or threaten public welfare.
