The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has proposed amendments to the 2014 policy for television rating agencies to end the current monopoly of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) and allow more players in the sector.
The draft aims to modernise the TV audience measurement system, enable fair competition, and capture changing viewing habits like smart TVs and streaming devices.
The government noted that India's current sample size is insufficient to reflect diverse regional preferences.
The proposal removes restrictive clauses and seeks public feedback within 30 days, aiming to boost data accuracy and promote innovation in the TV ratings ecosystem.
