The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed sharp hikes in vehicle fitness testing and certificate renewal fees to discourage the use of older vehicles.
Under the draft amendments to the Motor Vehicle Rules, fitness test charges for vehicles over 20 years will double — Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers and up to Rs 3,000 for heavy vehicles.
Renewal fees for such vehicles could go as high as Rs 25,000. The Centre has invited objections within 30 days.
This marks the second such proposal in 2025, with a push to shift all tests to automated centres.
