Centre Reviews Copyright Act To Address Legal Issues Posed By Generative AI, Lok Sabha Told

The Central Government informed the Lok Sabha that it is reviewing the adequacy of the Copyright Act,1957 in light of legal challenges arising from generative artificial intelligence.

In a written reply to a question by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has constituted an eight-member expert committee to examine the issue.

The committee has released Part I of a working paper on the use of copyrighted content for AI training and invited public feedback.

Questions relating to authorship, ownership and copyrightability of AI-generated works are being examined and are proposed to be covered in Part II, which is currently under review.
