Chandigarh Mayor Moves Supreme Court to Request 'Show of Hands' Voting for Mayoral Elections

  • Case Name: Kuldeep Kumar v. U. T. Chandigarh & Ors.
  • Judge(s): Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh

AAP leader and Chandigarh Mayor Kuldeep Kumar moved to the Supreme Court seeking ‘show of hands’ voting for the January 30, 2025, mayoral elections to avoid irregularities seen in 2024.

The Court, highlighting the need for free and fair elections, sought the Chandigarh administration’s response on appointing an independent observer, possibly a retired judge, to oversee the polls.

Kumar pointed to alleged ballot defacement in 2024 that initially declared a BJP candidate the winner before being overturned by the SC.

The Court allowed the election process to continue and will hear the matter again on January 27, 2025.
