CJI Surya Kant: Everyone has Right to Peaceful Protest, But Cannot Obstruct Common Man

The Supreme Court emphasized that while citizens possess a constitutional right to protest peacefully and lawfully, they cannot take to the streets to cause law and order problems or disrupt the common man.

The Bench made these observations while hearing a petition concerning the naming of the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Declining to intervene in the matter, the Court stated that naming public infrastructure falls strictly within the policy domain of the government rather than the judiciary.

The Court disposed of the petition, granting the liberty to pursue persistent democratic remedies before the competent authorities.
